Motorcycle insurance in Canada is seasonal in the driveway and year-round in the contract. The month you save on premium is the month you must get the lay-up endorsement right.
Riders in most provinces park the bike when salt and ice arrive. Insurers offer laid-up or storage rates that drop or suspend road cover while keeping fire and theft on a stored motorcycle. Riding in a thaw “just to the shop” on a laid-up policy is how otherwise careful people generate a denial.
Pleasure versus commuting
Rating cares whether the bike is a weekend machine or a daily commuter. A 12-kilometre each-way commute is not “pleasure only.” If your licence class, training (such as a recognized rider course), and clean record help the rate, commuting will still move it. Tell the truth on kilometres; odometer photos at claim time are awkward.
Lay-up rules
- Dates must match when the bike is actually off the road.
- Storage location matters: attached garage versus unlocked shed versus dealer lot.
- Liability for a trip to the mechanic may require a short reactivation — ask, do not assume.
- Comprehensive (fire, theft, vandalism) should remain if the bike has value.
Provincial overlays
Public auto regimes (BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Quebec’s bodily-injury system) change how you buy motorcycle cover. In private-market provinces, shop the specialty motorcycle insurers as well as the company that writes your car. A cheap add-on on a car policy can be a thin motorcycle form.
Gear and custom parts
Aftermarket exhausts, bags, and paint are not automatically included at full value. Schedule custom work. Riding gear is sometimes a rider; a $1,200 jacket is a contents-or-endorsement question, not a given.
A Barrie example
A rider laid up from November 1, then took a January warm-spell ride to “keep the battery happy.” A low-speed drop in a parking lot became a coverage debate. The repair was modest; the lesson was not. They now use a tender for winter charging and a written reactivation for April 15, with one allowed shop visit listed on the file.
Before the first ride in spring
- Confirm the policy is back on road cover the day you roll out.
- Check tires, insurance card, and licence class.
- Update commuting status if the job changed over the winter.
Seasonal riding is normal in Canada. Seasonal amnesia about the contract is optional.
