A gap is a period with no policy in force. Accidents are not polite enough to wait until 12:01 a.m. on the date you intended.
Canadians switch insurers for price, for a declined renewal, or because a broker moved markets. The mechanical risk is overlapping or underlapping: two premiums for the same week, or — worse — a claim on a Wednesday when cancellation was Tuesday night and the new binder was Thursday morning.
Bind first, cancel second
Have the new policy bound (in force) before you cancel the old one. Ask for a binder or declarations page with an effective date and time. Then cancel the old policy effective the same instant or a few hours later, not “sometime this week.”
Auto insurance in particular is a legal requirement to drive. A gap is not only an uninsured claim; it can be a licensing and finance problem.
Time of day
Effective times are often 12:01 a.m. Confirm the time zone. A switch done by email at 4 p.m. Friday may not be processed until Monday. If you are driving this weekend, do not assume the portal did what a human binder does.
Lenders and lessors
Mortgagees and auto lessors need to be listed. A new home insurer must receive the mortgagee clause. A new auto insurer must show the lessor. Gaps here are how you get a nasty letter from a bank that thought you went bare.
Claims in progress
An open claim stays with the policy that was on risk at the date of loss. Switching does not move a live water claim to the new company. Tell both sides. Do not let a cancellation mid-repair confuse who pays the contractor.
A Moncton example
A driver cancelled on the phone on a Thursday and bought a new policy online Friday after work. Thursday night, a parking-lot hit-and-run. The old insurer said they were off risk. The new one said they were not yet on risk. The file became a coverage fight over timestamps. A brokered same-day bind-and-cancel would have cost a phone call.
Checklist
- New declarations in hand.
- Same vehicle list, same address, all drivers named.
- Mortgagee / lessor listed.
- Written cancellation with matching effective date.
- Proof of insurance in the car the minute you drive.
Shopping is rational. Overlapping a day of premium is cheaper than overlapping a day of nothing.
